Samhain 104: Lunar Magic

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Samhain is third and final harvest festival, which takes place on the October 31 (April 30 southern hemisphere), which is about halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. It’s a time for mute dinners, dumb suppers, costumes, trick or treating, jack-o-lanterns, divination, bonfires, and all that fun Halloween stuff.

When you think of Halloween or Samhain you probably think of the full moon at night. The moon has been of the more romanticized and popular focal points for magic throughout time. It waxes and wanes, sometimes disappearing entirely. Furthermore, sometimes it’s out during the day!

In this episode, we’ll be discussing the magical properties of the moon, its cycles, and how you can use them in your practice. We also provide correspondences, discuss our experiences with lunar magic, and go on some fun tangents!

Pub Chat: The Abramelin Ritual - A Dark Song (2016) Review

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to Pub Chat! These episodes are for us to have a more free-form way to discuss listener questions, shorter subjects, as well as magical happenings, musings, and of course, go off on tangents.

In this week's Pub Chat we decided to analyze the Abramelin Ritual as it’s presented in the 2016 horror movie, A Dark Song. Not unlike Magic in Media, this review and discussion will go into what the movie presents with regard to its plot and the ritual and compare that to the history and magical structures that we know and understand. So, grab yourself something to drink and join us for a spooky season themed discussion… Ohh, and fear not, there is much vamping and many side quests!

Also, yes there was some sort of card error in my camera which corrupted the video files, so no video for most of this one. Sorry about that but you still get to listen to us at least! lol

Mabon 104: Grounding Magic

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Mabon takes place on the Autumnal Equinox, when day and night are equal. Created in the late 1900s, Mabon is a newer festival, but cultures throughout the world have been celebrating the Autumn Equinox for thousands of years. It’s a time of sharing and giving thanks, transition, preparing for winter, reflection, balance, and of course… feasting!

Since Mabon is all about finding a balance, this is a great time to talk about grounding. Grounding (AKA earthing, rooting, or raising energy) helps us balance ourselves, like the idea of “go out and touch grass.” Grounding can help reduce stress and improve mental focus, as well as replenishing and casting off our own magical energy.

So, hang out with us while we talk all about grounding and our personal experiences with it!

Pub Chat: Dark Religious Parasitism

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to Pub Chat! These episodes are for us to have a more free-form way to discuss listener questions, shorter subjects, as well as magical happenings, musings, and of course, go off on tangents.

In this week's Pub Chat we explore Dark Religious Parasitism. The idea that there is a malicious entity negatively affecting people and their relationship to their deities and practices. So grab yourself something to drink and join us for a strange conversation about a relatively novel interpretation of what is happening these days. Ohh, and fear not, there is much vamping and many side quests!

Definition: The noticeable shift in an organized religion from its patron’s doctrine to ones of hate utilizing misinformation and manipulation of teachings, selective following focusing solely on the out of context misinterpretations of select passages to reinforce hateful rhetoric, and/or the complete abandonment of key tenets if or when they oppose the new regimes focus of hate. These are additionally supported by otherness speech meant to segregate those who disagree or question the new regime, opportunistic practice where one applies the tenets of their faith to only a select group or at socially opportune times to hide or coverup hateful practices behind “goodness”, coded language to communicate and spread in group think, and outright lying publicly and to the self in order to not address or internalize the new regime of hate! The contagious spread of these parasitic creatures follow a spiraling path in both individual and group infection starting with small changes and spreading to ever greater hate. These creatures feed off not only the worship and faith energy of the newly infected followers but also of the spreading destruction of the original deities’ tenets and teachings like an insect bite that liquifies its victim for easier consumption.

Astrology 101: Planets, Signs, and Houses

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Astrology is quite old, with the first records of its practice going all the way back to ancient times. It was originally used to help predict agricultural patterns and the weather. Over time, it was used for other purposes and was a part of everyday life for centuries. Even still, what we think of as astrology—sun sign horoscopes—wasn’t popularized until the early 1900s.

In this episode, we talk about western astrology basics: the planets, the houses, and the signs. We discuss aspects of our personal charts, ways you can analyze your chart, where magic lives in your chart, and a healthy dose of getting into the weeds!

You may want to pull up or create your own birth (natal) chart so you can follow along! To do that, you’ll want to go to an astrology website or app to make one. You’ll need your date of birth, location of birth, and time of birth (as close as possible, if you don’t know the exact time). My favorite places to get that info from are:

https://cafeastrology.com/

https://www.astro.com/horoscope

Time Passages app (https://www.astrograph.com/birth-chart.php)

(We are not sponsored, I’m just a fan!)

Midsummer 104: Solar Magic

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Midsummer, or Litha takes place on the Summer Solstice, which is the longest day of the year. Midsummer has been celebrated throughout the world since the Neolithic times with themes of abundance, growth and fertility among other things.

For our 104 series, we’re exploring elemental magic related to the themes of each season, and for Midsummer, there’s no better type to explore than solar magic! In this episode, we discuss historical examples of sun worship, ways to harness the magic of the sun, and how you can use them in your practice. Of course, we also go over sun correspondences and our own experiences (or lack thereof) with solar magic.

Egyptian Family Tree

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

Deity worship was a crucial part of everyday life in ancient Egypt, and we know of more than 1,500 gods by name. With the exception of the reign of Akhenaten (17 years, in 14th c BCE), the Egyptians were a polytheistic religion. Today, we know the Egyptian deities by their ancient Greek names, and we’ll be talking about Amun, Ra, Horus, Hathor, Sekhmet, Maat, Osiris, Isis, Set, Bastet, Anubis, Ptah, and Thoth. We also share their correspondences, and where they fit in with each other.

Lucid Dreaming

Greeting’s heathens and witches,

Welcome to the Horn and Cauldron podcast…

A lucid dream is a dream in which you’re aware you’re dreaming and can possibly control different aspects of the dream. Some can access this state naturally, and for others this is a learnable skill to interpret and control your dreams. While there’s a lot we don’t know about lucid dreaming, science is starting to understand methods to enter a lucid dream state, and how it can help you.

In this episode, we discuss why you would want to lucid dream, how to do it, and key techniques that can help you in both your waking and sleeping state. We also go over our own experiences, and thoughts on lucid dreaming, and how it can help you.
